Activites
Most resorts offer a spectacular choice of watersports such as waterskiing, boats rides and scuba diving in the crystal clear waters
of the Adriatic is a “must”. Tennis, table tennis, bowling, mini-golf and volleyball are just as popular. Mountain-climbing is also a
local tradition dating back to the early 1800s with a stunning unspoilt landscape, this is hiker’s paradise.
Entertainment
Almost every large resort on the Adriatic coast organises its own summer festivals, there are different open-air concerts, fisherman’
s nights and folk dancing shows to enjoy. Dancing is a major form of entertainment and there are plenty of bars and discos which
stay open late. Many larger hotels organise their own entertainment, although it’s advisable to check when it is offered.
Food and Drinks
Eating out is inexpensive and delicious. There is a huge variety of local and international dishes to enjoy. This area of the Adriatic is
fish lovers’ paradise with over 370 species cooked in almost as many ways. ”Brodet”, a dish made of several kinds of fish,
deserves special attention. Another excellent choice is the ”Prsut”, the dark smoked Dalmatian ham, the paprika flavoured salami or
the mature domestic cheeses. In addition, the wine-growing region of Dalmatia produces some great white and red wines and
there are some interesting local lagers you should sample.
Money Matters
The monetary unit in Croatia is the Kuna. Foreign currency can be exchanged at the airports, banks, exchange bureaux, post offices
and some hotels within the larger resorts. Also all major cards are accepted
Short History
Like many countries in Western Europe, Croatia was founded on the ruins of the Roman Empire. When they arrived in the territory of
present-day Croatia, the Croats were politicaly organized in principalities. In 925, Croatian King Tomislav united the principalities,
establishing the first Croatian state. Later, Croatia retained its legal status and autonomy within the framework of the Hungarian
empire, and the Habsburg Monarchy.
